Kevin started this important thread in 2014 as a new topic. I wonder if we can have some historic review now that it may be a hot issue again.
A huge event in masters marathoning took place at this year's Jacksonville Marathon: An American named Gene Dykes (M70 from PA) broke Ed Whitlock's Age 70-74 world age group record by clocking 2:54:23 on USATF certified course FL10117EBM. But Canada just rejoiced with the news that it will not be ratified due to lack of the USATF sanction!
Dykes even contacted the event organizer in advance to assure the marathon was eligible for records. He was told it was. Apparently, we are not doing a good job of educating our RDs!
I too thought the requirement for sanction, in addition to the certified course, was relatively new but if the rule is actually 262.3.a, then that was not new at all in 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009... I have an old 2001 rule book where the rule numbers are now defunct and the exact same verbiage appears in 2001 as USATF Rule 182.3.a.
Has the sanction always been required?

Here is the USATF sanctions calendar listing. (Note the event does not have the "sanctioned" indicator, a black dot, but it may be misleading to have the race appear in the "sanctions calendar" at all...)
