I went to Ridgefield to get in a last measurement before winter sets in (the weatherman lied, and the predicted 58F never materialized, making the ride less enjoyable than expected).

I went to a cal course I'd laid out in town last year. Found one end easy as can be. Rode to the other end, and when I approached where my counts indicated it should be - no nail. There was, however, a 2-colored paint line on the curb, just as I'd painted at the first nail when the course was laid out. After brushing away some sand, I found a nice little divot in the asphalt, where the nail obviously had been. I'd pounded this nail about as flush as can be, and less than 6 inches out from the curb. The snowplow guys in Ridgefield must really be diligent.

Believe it or not, last night I had a dream about this (it wasn't a nightmare, although I've had my share of measurement jobs that qualify as such).

In the dream, I went back to the cal course a few days later and found the nail, about 6 inches closer to the other end of the cal course than I'd calibrated to. I quickly began doing the mental gymnastics to figure out if the course was therefor long or short; that woke me up.
