Believe it or not, last night I had a dream about this (it wasn't a nightmare, although I've had my share of measurement jobs that qualify as such).

In the dream, I went back to the cal course a few days later and found the nail, about 6 inches closer to the other end of the cal course than I'd calibrated to. I quickly began doing the mental gymnastics to figure out if the course was therefor long or short; that woke me up.
