I had a request to measure a marathon 60 miles from home, and didn’t want to spend three days traveling and measuring. With a rush I could have done it in two, but instead suggested that I come up for one day for a fee that covered expenses, measure the in-town part of the course, and leave the two out-back parts to a volunteer who would accompany me and measure as I did.

Dave Heithaus was the volunteer, and he was great. He made all the usual mistakes, but never twice. It didn’t take much time for him to see what was to be done. I left him with the job of finishing the course and drawing the map. His measurements were fine, but his map was the best I’ve ever seen from a first-time measurer. Here it is.
