IAAF-AIMS certification (it is a joint system) is required, as David says, for Olympic or World Championship qualification. It is also required for a race to appear on any official international calendar. So Duane is right: it is most valuable to races trying to attract an international field. Jim is not right about AIMS being concerned only with Marathons - it is all road measurement, and courses from 5km to 100km appear in our Calendar.

As for the expense, there need not be any. If your USATF measurer is also accredited to the IAAF-AIMS list, as many are, the same measurement documentation can be submitted for both types of certification.

There are many countries where no measurement system exists, and in such cases IAAF-AIMS offer a kind of "umbrella" under which accurate measurement can be applied and recognised.

I am a grade "B" measurer and I submit my work to Mike Wickiser for certification is that who I also send it to for IAAF-AIMS certification also?
