That's a great graphic. My only suggestion is not call it a Jones-Oerth Counter but just Jones Counter or Jones-Riegel Counter. The photo of the counter is the Riegel device, not the Jones-Oerth device.
I guess it's hard for them to get it all correct. They call it a "Jones measuring device" and a "Jones-Oerth" but, as you note, the J-R is pictured. There are probably a few other simplifications, but it should serve to satisfy complaints on race day or posted whining after a race (assuming the course is certified).
This is fabricated statistic that is, nonetheless, repeated over and over again. No one has tested modern GPS devices and shown this to be true. There are good GPS devices(most Garmins) and bad ones, and the good ones are NOT typically 1-3% in error for measuring distance.
Mark, you are correct and I will talk to Tracey Sunland at the meeting next week. Maybe you could help with some ideas on what h R&R folks should state.
I feel they just want people to know that a GPS is not as accurate as one would think.
I'm sure 99% of the complaints they get are from people saying the course is long. They aren't running the SPR. That's really all that needs to be said.
The education of the general running public is continuous. Like so many of the news stories missing the correct terminology that is common to most measurers. The Rock n’ Roll Marathon Series’ Running GPS vs Certified Courses explanation misses a few of finer points; Step 3, A certified, experienced cyclist… - should say anyone following the Manual procedures., Step 4, …two readings are the same. – should read 2 measurements should agree within 0.08%. and Fun Facts, The Jones-Oerth… - should be JR Counter.
These little description errors are good opportunities to clarify the course measurement process and clear up any miss interpretations. At least the Rock n’ Roll Marathon Series didn’t say courses are “sanctioned”. How often does that still happen?
