In October last year I came across a late December 5 km race advertising it was using a certified course. Having measured a couple of 5 km’s in the very same location the race was held, both finished on the high school track. If the race was using either previously certified course the school track was very likely to be covered in snow. I did not find a new listing on the Course List. So I contacted the race director.

The race director understood from the measurer his course was certified – he paid the measurer a month before his event in 2012. Asked if he received a Measurement Certificate and pointed him to the online listing. So I urged him to contact the measurer to finalize the certification submission for approval.

The measurer never completed the certification work prior to the 2012 event, and now the 2013 event. 14 months have passed since the measurer was paid and said he completed the course measurement.

The course remains NOT certified. The measurer has now promised to get the work done in 2014 when the weather cooperates.

What do you do?

Kevin, what do you do? You did all the right things. Had something similar happen in MI about 25 years ago. Saw somebody claim they had a certified course in an area of the state (SW corner) that didn't have ANY certified courses. I contacted the RD who indignantly wrote back saying so-and-so had measured it and he had a cert letter. I asked him to copy the letter & send it to me. Sure enough, the measurer had made the whole thing up. I told the RD this and he backed down. Don't know what pound he exacted from the IN measurer. Don't care. The course never did get certified.
