Woman fatally struck by vehicle ID'd

ARIZONA DAILY STAR

A woman who was fatally struck by a van Tuesday morning on Tucson's west side was identified as Leeann Marie Sanchez, police said.

Sanchez, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on West 36th Street, west of South Lands End Road.

Officers and Tucson Fire paramedics responded to the area around 6:15 a.m. to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian, according toSgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman. Sanchez was found in the road, Bay said.

Traffic detectives learned that Sanchez was walking east on 36th Street on the south side of the road.

A 1998 Dodge van was also traveling east on 36th Street, and the driver saw Sanchez and steered the vehicle away from her, Bay said. Sanchez stepped into the lane of travel and was struck by the van, according to Bay.

The van's driver remained at the scene and witnesses gave Sanchez aid until paramedics arrived, Bay said.

Investigators said neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors in the crash.

This is the first traffic fatality in the city since Jan. 1, compared to two fatalities at this time last year, according to police data.
