I am doing a survey to see what distance units people use in measurement reports of JONES COUNTER measurements.

My personal preferences are:

For an overall course length given in km
I use km (with 4 decimal places), and on these I invariably locate km split points, giving the distance from the split point to the reference street furniture in metres (either 0 or 1 decimal place).

For an overall course length given in miles
I use miles (with 4 decimal places). I usually locate mile split points, giving the distance from the split point to the reference street furniture in metres (either 0 or 1 decimal place). Occasionally I have to also provide km split points on a mile course. This is I find is best shown with a second column of accumulated distances in km.

I would be interest to know what readers of this board prefer.

My limited choice of options in this poll may not cover your preference. Please make a reply if you have another option which you sometimes use.

For Imperial courses, I use mile splits, although in longer races sometimes every 5km as well; for metric courses usually miles, although for 5km courses I will occasionally do km splits, in longer races each 5km point, and usually the halfway point.

On the S/F details, I usually give the distance in both units, since most RDs probably aren't metrically conversant.

I generally work in meters, even when the course length is in Imperial units. I always set intermediate 5K multiples, but will usually set intermediate mile marks unless the race director specifically asks me to set kms. I think my courses measured count is around 300 and I can count the number of courses where I have set km splits on one hand.
I work in miles, but most courses here are in kilometers. In fact, local runners freak out if the course isn't a multiple of 5K. I measured a 6K course last autumn which led to the question, "why 6K?" to which I answered, "why not!?"

I measured a 5K/15K point-to-point course in km last year and told the RD I was going to do it that way in order to simplify my life. I gave him a course with km splits...there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth, followed by a request for mile split locations. Lesson learned.
