Let's say a Triathlon has it's Marathon Certified and uses an accurate timing system. Would their times be considered for records?

I feel it would be difficult to set any record under the conditions competing in a Triathlon, but my guess is a record should count.

Would this be a qualifier for Boston?

I understand that these questions could be directed to our Records Chair or to Boston, but I wonder how others feel?

Gene,

I would agree with you that the record would count, as it would likely be a state record, and not an American record. I don't see how anyone could set an American record after doing the swim and bike. But, I suppose a state record could occur.

I also don't see why the time can't be used as a Boston qualifier, as long as the run time starts at the proper location. I believe you have to apply to Boston to be a "qualifier" race, so they would also need verification that the timing started at the proper location.

Do you anticipate setting a record in your next Ironman?
I suppose a running start is not a factor in road race records. I understand masters records may be set using elapsed time rather than gun time, which presumes a running, rather than a standing, start.

Start/finish areas in triathlons generally allow a fair amount of space between the end of one segment and the start of another. I guess it would depend on the timing mats being placed in exactly the right places.
