I was moving a Jones counter from one bike to another and noticed there is "play" in the tang -- it does not stay snug against a spoke. Should it? Moving it back and forth between the two spokes doesn't register any counts, but I'm wondering if it would over the distance of a course measurement.

Diana,

The “play” you’re observing has no effect in the long term. The gearing assures us that the right number of counts will be recorded based exactly on the number of rotations of the bicycle wheel. Having said that, we still have to be concerned when recording counts, particularly at the end of each pass on the calibration course. Make sure that, while reading, your last movement was forward. This is covered in the Course Measurement Procedures manual in the section, “Performing the Calibration.”

You can get rid of the backlash by wiring the tang to a spoke. I think this is a Pete Riegel idea.
