just a thought,

has anyone used a recumbent bike for course measurement? it struck me that marking the road surface would be much easier from the lower seating position, without dismounting, and one could fit a pointer to the frame of the bike that could be easily aligned with calibration marks.

if this is an old topic, i apologize.

My only reservations would be that since most recumbents have longer wheelbases than normal bikes, it might be harder to cut a tight line around a turn. Also, since they're lower, they're less visible to motorists, so cutting across traffic might be more dangerous as well. I'd think you'd be limited to using an electronic cyclometer or a Lacroix J/O counter, since it would be tough to see the front wheel.
