Are the maps we create and get posted to the USATF web site copyrighted? I made a map for Running4Hope 5k (11034MW) and another race took the map and made some changes and posted it to their web site and I am wondering if anyone else has run into this problem? To view the other map go to

Thank you for any help on this.

This is a tough call, Jim!

It is my understanding that legally we don't absolutely have to assert "COPYRIGHT 2011 by J. A. Wilhelm" to be protected by the copyright laws. The map is your intellectual property.

I compared OH11034MW with the copied map. It's clear that they lifted most of your unique "not to scale" map. They even "stole" your street names text verbatum, START and FINISH lines and text and the little runner and compass.

But, they have used their own arrows; their own supplementary text, moved the 2-mile marker; added the lake; and crudely added all the surrounding streets.

We might need a copyright attorney to distinguish when a copier has done enough customization to call the new work his own.
