I time races and measure them.
This post is to formally request that measurers make sure, whenever possible, that the start and finish points of a certified course are free of manhole covers (or other such large metal objects) in the road or bike path.
The reason? The metal in the manhole covers usually interferes with the RFID antennae used by chip timing equipment.
Thank you!

What about right beside the road?

I am working on two courses right now that look like the start/finish line will be right beside a storm drain (this is one of our "triple storm drains" with 3 manhole covers, and the start line could be right beside the middle one. Should I find a reason to move that line forward or backward to keep clear of those manhole covers?
I followed David's suggestion. The timing company says a manhole like that (beside the start/finish line, over a storm drain) is not going to be a problem.

Of course the storm drain could be a problem-- I always think I'm likely to drop something that will fall into the storm drain. For this I probably need to consult a shrink not a race timer.
