A marker in a soft surface cal course I did in 2012 is missing. I have to redo it and am soliciting suggestions for what to use and how to describe its location. It is in a heavily used park next to a trail where people with metal detectors are bound to periodically dig up anything metal. The nearest permanent object, a bench, is about 15' away. Depending on the local magnetic environment, my hand held compass readings can easily vary 10 degrees from what GE says.
My current thinking is to vertically drive in a 6" long piece of 3/8" toilet supply line to ground level and plan on an extensive search along a radius from a permanently affixed bench leg. There are only two legs and the line of the bench is maybe 15 degrees off the line of the course.

See the west end of VA 12003MS.

I suggest moving the whole course south by about 11 feet, so that the north marker lines up with the two legs of the bench. Drive in a 1 foot length of rebar to ground level. Or just use the bench legs as the marker. Does the bench sit on a concrete pad? If so, the extension of the NW edge of the pad could be the new line reference.

Then move the south end the same amount and change the reference distance from the "Historic Concrete A1 Mile Marker."
I like Pete's answer if that works for you. It does appear that you guys may have wanted the mark well off the trail, so another thought is to place the north end that same distance from the bench but right in line with the front (legs?) of the bench.

I hope you'll report on how you end up solving this and other questions about the cal course. We may be able (once again) to prevail on Pete's ability to put pictures in the conversation.
