Two cautionary notes have been added to www.jonescounter.com as follows:

TWO CAUTIONS

The manufacturer of the Veeder-Root counter used on the Jones counter recommends that rotation not exceed 500 rpm. In riding terms this amounts to about 15 mph or 25 km/hr. Many get away with riding faster, but forewarned is forearmed. Overspeed may cause damage to the working parts of the counter.

Several old pre-JR model counters have been received for rehab. On some it is hopeless and we can’t help. One cause is a buildup of black gummy material in the main gear joint. We recommend that no lubricant be used in this joint, as it attracts dirt, and can turn into a sticky paste.

I guess I failed to read this information. My Jones Counter broke this morning on my first calibration ride. I knew not to exceed 20 mph while measuring, but I had the counter attached to my bike on several personal rides where I at times got up to 25+mph. Expensive mistake.

I've exceed 15mph many times (as I'm sure many have) and haven't broken a counter yet, but 25mph is really pushing it!

I mount my bike on a rack that does not lock down the wheels. More than once I have looked back to see my front wheel spinning crazy fast and had to pull over to fix. I use a small bungee cord to wrap around the brake handle to prevent the wheel from spinning.

Reminds me of the time my wife left her Fitbit attached to her bra and sent it through the washer and dryer. That day she racked up 20,000 steps.
