Pete: Have you ever heard of any special requirements to make a course "Olympic" certified. I've heard of it somewhere before.

Thanks,
Mark

Dear Mark,

I've never heard the term "Olympic certified." I know that an Olympic marathon course must be measured by an IAAF "A" level measurer, but any US course that wants to have people qualify for the Olympics need only be USATF certified and must not be a downhill course. Elevation drop may not exceed 1 m/km of course length and start-finish separation (measured in a straight line) may not exceed 30 percent of race length.

I will put this exchange on the Course Measurement Bulletin Board. Could be I have it wrong. We'll see what others say.

Best, Pete
