Yep. I wonder how they got that so messed up. It should be 282 feet and 86 meters below sea level. At first I thought they applied the conversion in the wrong direction but that doesn’t check out either. Mystery. Who is going to break the news to them?
Aha, I hadn’t noticed the decimal place. It isn’t 855 m, it is 85.5 m. So, they are okay.
That decimal point is definitely tough to see.
You still have to wonder where they got 85.5 though, since the correct value is 85.95.
Wikipedia says the sign's location is not actually the lowest point in Death Valley. There are slightly lower points a few miles away. Perhaps the 85.5 was the sign maker's little protest regarding that fact. :-)
