New Options for Bike Tires ("Tyres" if You Are British )

Even if you are not already a fan of Veritasium (on YouTube), this is an interesting short video on how materials science is changing our options for bicycle tires: Nitinol Bike Tires Developed By NASA .

NASA has developed tires for its planetary rovers out of the shape memory alloy nitinol. In this video, engineers demonstrate how this material works for bicycle tires. I do not think it is necessary to be an engineer to appreciate the technical discussion that follows the bike demo. Supposedly, these tires + rims are due to be available late this year.

Good question, Paul. I suppose we might hazard a guess that metal tires might produce less variation than rubber, but I haven't seen the data yet.
