National Listing of Recent Course Measurers

At the RRTC meeting in Jacksonville it was suggested that a national list of course measurers, perhaps only those active in the last two years, be created. The idea was to give inquiring people some options in case they wanted to hire a measurer. Some said such a list was unnecessary, as the state certifier was up to date on local measurers and could provide the information. Some like the idea of the list.

Kevin Lucas is creating such a list, covering only those measurers who have been active during 2004 and 2005. He has sent inquiries to all the certifiers in the hope that they will send him contact information for the measurers for whom they have recently certified courses.

I have provided Kevin with a list of those in my areas. For those who feel that this is wasted effort, I think one should reflect that a certifier should already have such a list handy for use by those who need to find a measurer. It’s very little extra effort to send it to Kevin.

An example of the format may be found at:

Note that other formats are welcome. Kevin can rearrange.

Some have suggested that some measurers may object to being on a national list. I doubt there will be more than a few, and they are already publicly available, as we have always provided certificates on demand for those who want them, and the name and address of the measurer is there. And, if any measurers objects, they can easily be removed.

Still up in the air is maintenance of the list as it ages and new people measure and old ones quit, and contact information changes. As far as I am concerned, this is a problem for later.

Dear USATF/RRTC Regional Certifiers,

Thank you to all of you who have submitted your course measurer directory information. We are off to a good start with the list, already received information from several individuals covering 27 states. The Course Measurer List created from the 193 names submitted to date includes information from; Pete Riegel (OH), Matthew Studholme (ND, SD, KY, WV & HI), Bill Glauz (KS & MO), Ray Nelson (RI), Michael Franke (IA & MT), Ron Fitzpatrick (ME, NH, & VT), Brian Smith (SC), Bob Baumel (OK), Tom McBrayer (TX), John Sissala (MD), Woody Cornwell (GA), Dave Poppers (CO & UT), Bob Langenbach (WA), Lee Barrett (OR), Bill Callanan (NV), Gene Newman (AZ), Amy Morss (NY), and Scott Hubbard (MI).

While making a few telephone calls to update the list, I received many positive comments about creating this course measurer list. The total number of measurers on the list could possibly exceed 300. Many measurers wanted to add to the list their alternate telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. There is a lot of measurer enthusiasm out there.

For those who have not submitted course measurer information, please try to get your list to me by January 31st. Looking forward to receipt of information from those who are putting together their course measurer lists. Please use the current Excel spread sheet format to supply your list.

Happy New Year.

Sincerely,

Kevin P. Lucas

Matthew Studholme has suggested a sorting of the Active Course List for measurers who cross state lines, and will add a column to the Course Measurer List for this added information.

For those who have not submitted course measurer information yet, please try to get your list to me by January 31st. Looking forward to receipt of information from those who are putting together their course measurer lists. Please use the current Excel spread sheet format to supply your list.

Happy New Year.

Sincerely,
A list of active Canadian measurers and posted it on the Athletics Canada measurement and certification web site. http://www.mts.net/%7Ellacroix/05meas.htm

It includes three categories of measurers:

M (measurer): The lead measurer responsible for the submission of the application for certification, including the measurement data and map.

A (assistant): A measurer who recorded measurement data and submitted it to the lead measurer.

V (validator): The measurer appointed to validate a course for IAAF or AIMS.

All participants in the measurement are included on course lists with the lead measurer named first. http://www.mts.net/%7Ellacroix/05id.htm

Thank you Mark for posting your note. You and others have commented how the new Course Measurers Listing is getting some good use. Additionally, I have received a number of corrections from the course measurers themselves. The USATF site in general is attracting more and more users by offering services and resources not found anywhere else.

Runners here across Western NY are frequent users of the Certified Course List. Race directors in our Niagara Association visit the USATF for course renewal forms, sanction forms, club applications, and maybe most importantly, the free event calendar listings. The Course Measurers Listing is another other compliment to the other resources at USATF.

How do we get event director using the Course Measurers Listing?
