My journey continues. 1984, 1996, 2012, & 2016.
I leave Wednesday to measure the Olympic Marathon and Race Walks along with Rodolfo Eichler and Hugh Jones - Two of the best road course measurers in the world.
Rodolfo has done all of the heavy lifting - mapping out and measuring all the segments in advance just as Jones did in 2012.
In 2012 Jones and I were within 1.4 meters of each other. Next week I hope to be in the same zip code!

Rio Marathon Course

From Pete Riegel:

I asked Rodolfo Eichler, Brazil’s top “A” measurer about elevations and he said:

"The main problem we were faced for this job was the urban renovation by the City, mainly in downtown area * see map w details. The course, as you know the area of Flamengo Park, runs along the Guanabara Bay and the renovated Port, with no significant elevation change Our visitors, measured it with poor traffic protection, could completed and adjust the distance, I myself and Suzana Gnaccarini, now herself “A” level measurer, acted as helpers with others escorts. David Katz, plenty of laser tools, will return Rio next 10th of August for the final battle; he is going to write on his impressions, RW – the 1000/2000 m, were designed 40km far from City Centre, zero elevation, it will be re certified on race days, always after the final location of cones and barriers (11th, 12th and 19th of August). *see the course map for a recent championship, I will be very happy to discuss all this course details with MNForum, about the three 10 km looping and site-seeing course, politically correct, but far from a technical one. So, the route is 3 loops and basically flat. Elevation very close to sea level throughout.
The course configuration starts with a 5k segment, the 3 x 10k loop, thena a 7k+ segment back to the finish.
I have been asked by many for a map and elevation information but I should not do this until the course is finalized by the LOC and the IAAF. There is also the problem of protocol. I can only release information once it is made available by the LOC & IAAF. Some of you might think this is silly but this is reality when you are dealing with many layers above me and a strict chain of command!!!
