I am laying out a a course for a 10/20/30 km race; it's a multi-loop course with a single loop of approximately 10km (there's an out & back section that can be adjusted to make the loop distance correct).
The problem is the runners will finish slightly outside the loop in the driveway of the race HQ building. If the course is adjusted lot make the loop 10km including that finish strip, the 20 & 30Kers will be short by that distance. So here's my solution:
Assume for simplicity the road course is 6 miles and the driveway is 0.2. That makes it perfect for the 10k runners, but those in the longer 2 races will be short by that distance on one or two of their loops.
So, for the second and third loops, we extend the turnaround by 0.1. That gives them an extra 0.2 on their second and third loops, plus the finish into the club makes 12.4 or 18.6.
So we'd have to indicate "First Loop Turnaround" and "2nd/3rd Loop Turnaround" but otherwise the loops would be identical. And since the distance we're dealing with on the driveway is actually only about 40-50m the turnaround would be only half that distance past the first loop TA. Have I thought this through correctly?
