I conducted a measurement/certification seminar this past weekend at the 49th annual RRCA convention held March 8-12, 2006 in Houston, TX. Bob Barnhill, a long-time Houston measurer, and Bill Grass (TX/WI) assisted me. We were limited to 75 minutes so there was no time for hands on as we often do. These are my quick impressions.
As a heads up for Chicago in 2007 (next year’s site), I would recommend the presenter find out if the convention organizers know the difference between measurement and certification. Not everyone does. This was billed as a “Certification Seminar,” and I think that as a result, we got mostly race directors and some experienced measurers — not the would-be measurers we had expected and hoped for. Of the 15 participants, only 2-3 appeared to be inexperienced as most questions focused on the already certified course, not how to measure it. It was a good group with lost of participation, just not we had anticipated.
