The Jones/Oerth “HANDLEBAR MOUNTED COUNTER” consists of three parts:
1. A Sprocket Gear
2. A Bracket Mounted Six Digit Counter
3. A Speedometer Cable

The Sprocket Gear is to be mounted on the front wheel of a bicycle between the wheel hub and the fork of the bike with the engagement prong of the sprocket gear engaging the wheel spokes of the bike.

The Bracket Mounted Five or Six Digit Counter is to be located near the center of the handlebar of the bike and positioned for convenient reading of the counter.

One end of the Speedometer Cable will be connected to the Sprocket Gear and the other end of the Cable will be connected to the Bracket Mounted Five or Six Digit Counter. The Cable can only be attached one way, i.e. the end that fits on the sprocket gear will not fit on the threaded Counter connector.

Here the handlebar-mounted counter is shown on Pete Riegel’s bike.

Here is the standard axle-mounted counter

The proteges and bell electronic counters do an equivalent job to that of the six-digit handlebar Jones at less than 10% and 5% of the cost, respectively. Though I think it is a mistake to choose a counter on price alone, in my prejudiced opinion the electronic counters give superior performance especially as they have instant zeroing capability.

Should a measurer wish to remain loyal to his axle-mounted Jones, he can get the advantages of an electronic counter by using it in conjuction with his Jones.
