Here are photos of that first counter. You'll see that the two parts are not connected. I lashed the counter part to the front fork after sticking the squared off part in the gear. Notice the patent date: 1896.
It was only when Ted Corbitt insisted that, to sell the device, it had to be as a one unit that I hooked them together with wire.
