Pete, you certified a course for me here in Bismarck a couple years ago. I have (had) and older Jones counter that has pooped out on me. I ordered a new one from Paul, but, as you know he has put a hold on the new type. My problem is I need one badly to remark the course etc for our early September race. Does the RRTC have any for rent? Is there a contact I can use?

Any and all help and suggestions would be geatly appreciated.

Regards,

David Nash

Pete’s reply:
Dear David,

I have none to rent. Perhaps someone else can help. We are hoping to see production resume in a few months.

I will post your request on the Course Measurement Bulletin Board. You can read this at:
https://measure.infopop.cc/eve/ubb.x

I urge you to register and participate.

Under the heading "Course Measurement" you will see a counter I made. It has 100 miles on it and is still working well.

Under "Electronic Measurement" you will see articles about how to use a Protege 9.0 cyclocomputer to measure courses. I have used it, and once you get used to it, it works well.

I am attaching an article from the Bulletin Board that describes how to use the Protege. It is a lot simpler than the article implies. It is the best of the options presented. You need to program the thing to a wheel diameter of 9999 mm, and make marks on your front wheel. There is an article under "Course Measurement" that describes how to mark the wheel. If you elect to go this way I will be happy to tutor you online.

Best regards, Pete

I'm not sure this will help David Nash. Here, in the USATF New England Association, we have a Jones counter that is routinely rented out to folks interested in measuring and certifying their course withing our association. We include the counter, manual, video and a set of application papers. The cost of the one-week rental is $25. The association pays the shipping out, the measurer pays the return shipping. I'm would not be suprised if there are other USATF associations doing something similar.
