I went out to calibrate this morning, and found that my cyclocomputer display was frozen and would not respond to button-pushing. I've no idea why - it was 45F. No problem, as I was going to use my JO Counter anyway.
Sounds like an electronic problem - I've noticed cold weather (much lower than 45F) can make the LCD digits sluggish and kill batteries, but not "freeze" the display. I did have a similar experience with my Nike Triax watch last week but found it was b/c the battery was in its death throes - when I pushed the backlight button the whole thing gave up the ghost.
I have a Planet Bike Protege 9 and had a similar experience the other night. The temp was in the low 40s and the display was barely visible. I plugged in a new battery and it came back to life. I think the cold weather makes a LCD sluggish and tends to put additional strain on batteries.
BTW: I picked the Protege 9 because it has a built-in thermometer.
It turned out that my cyclocomputer malfunction was due to a dead battery. I was surprised, as I bought the thing in August 2004. Maybe that's why they sent me an extra battery with the thing, which I installed. I'll keep an eye on it next time I go out on a cold day.
