I have a request from a race director to measure an alternate finish for a half Marathon & 5K (same finish). He wants to use this alternate in the event of a security issue at the normal finish line (think Boston). My question is: Is there a way to get this alternate finish certified but not published as a map on the USATF website? Maybe, for security reasons, it would be better just to measure and not certify? The race director does not plan to publish the existence or location of this alternate finish line.

I would measure and prepare the certificate for the alternate course. Send the certificate to the next level and ask that the alternate course not be certified or published. If you need to use the alternate course at the last moment, as far as american records are concerned, you need only prove the alternate path is the correct distance. Thank you. -- Justin
