EARLY WHEELCHAIRS
The previous discussion about the Charleston Distance Run brought back a memory. In the 1975 race I remember laboring up the initial huge hill, and passing a number of wheelies on the way. After getting to the top I was happy to be going steeply downhill again. After a few minutes I heard people yelling “Wheelchair! Wheelchair!” I moved over and soon was passed by a wheelie moving VERY fast. I’ve never seen a faster one since.
At that time modern racing wheelchairs were rare, and I’d never seen one. Nor did I then. The wheelchair that passed was an ordinary one, with the two small caster wheels in front. I couldn’t believe the speed the guy was making. Steep downhill on such an unstable racing platform.
I expected to see him crashed by the roadside, but didn’t.
Racing wheelchairs are a lot better suited to the task these days.
