I assume that every measurer measures (and marks) splits while measuring a course. If you measure a 5k, you either measure and mark the miles, or km splits, I assume. Marathon courses may have miles, plus multiple-of-5k splits.

Or, am I wrong in my assumption that splits are measured by everyone? Seems to me that splits are part of what we deliver when we measure a course.

Does anyone not measure splits for their certified courses? I am not saying that the splits are certified - I am just assuming that splits are measured and marked for virtually every course we measure.

I will always do mile splits, plus every 5 km. In a 5 km course I will measure the 2.5 km point. In a half marathon I will also measure the halfway point (this is seldom done, but I think it's a very useful split for the runners).
In some of my own metric races I will mark every kilometer as well as every mile.
A trick I learned from Hugh Jones (who in turn copped it from bike races) is to mark the final 800 or 1,000m in 100 or 200m intervals. I do this in all races likely to have a pro field where the timing of a finishing kick is crucial, but the average runner who may be struggling toward the finish finds encouragement in a more frequent "countdown" over the final segment.
