Our Vestal XX 20 km course is to hold its 42nd race this coming Saturday. Someone has challenged whether our course record from 1981 is still valid since the start and finish have changed since then. But the bulk of the course is unchanged. If I need to define "bulk" I could by referring to our certification maps. Each time the start and finish changed, we have re-measured it and recertified it.

No one has come close in recent years to that record (1:03:17) from 1971.

BYW, this is the course for which the Jones Counter was invented in 1971.

Depending on how the start and finish line has changed depends on what terminology you use.
If the configuration is the same, then I would say you could call it course record.

But in my opinion, if the start or finish has changed resulting in any change in elevation or turns, then I would call it an event record.
