Race director Matt Fagan notified me today that the course of yesterday's 3M Half-Marathon in Austin, TX, USA was short by about 1/10th of a mile, or 0.161 km. Apparently, the course was mismarked past the 10-K mark.
"The difference is that the course should have turned right from Stoneway Drive onto Pioneer Place, then north onto Shoal Creek Blvd. Instead, the course went straight from Stoneway Drive and turned north onto Shoal Creek Blvd," read a statment from the race's organizing committee. "The distance difference is 0.10 of a mile."
In today's RRW I speculated that there was a strong tailwind to go with the already aided, downhill course which falls 114m from start to finish. Now we know that the race was only 20,906m long. The winning men's time of 1:01:45 by Nicodemus Malakwen of Kenya adjusts to 1:02:21 for a full half-marathon, while the winning woman's time of 1:10:02 by Kang Soon Duk of Korea adjusts to 1:10:43.
"We genuinely and deeply regret the error, especially since it was a wonderful day for running, so many ran so well, so many volunteers worked so hard, and so many people enjoyed the event," continued the statement. "We are working to correct the
error in course set-up and promise to do better in the future."
