I think this has been discussed, but let's say you have a certified course, that starts and finishes at the same point and in the same direction. This question comes up regarding DC13004RT, the Semper Fi 5K. What if the organizers want to move the start and finish back about 40 feet? It's still 5 km,although the mile points would be off unless they move them. Are they still running a certified course?

A point to note is that in this case the timers are supposed to have the timing mat BEFORE the start line and AFTER the finish line so they need to adjust it during the race. But that doesn't answer the other question. Any thoughts? (Or tell me where this has already been discussed?)

Bob,

Since the certified course (DC13004RT) is a closed loop (and not an out-and-back), the start and finish can be anywhere on the course. It is no different than a race walk loop. The common start/finish point on a 50 km race walk can be located anywhere on the 1 to 2 km closed loop course.

Hope this helps. -- Justin
