Re: Certification Numbering

I have seen some of our Certifiers use the following numbering of their Certificates: "NJ-11001-GAN" or "NJ11001-GAN".

During the last couple of months a few people have asked why their course wasn't on the USATF site. I searched for the course and it was there. I discovered they were searching using one of the above situations. That is, they used dash(es), hence they couldn't find their course.

I don't find this to be a big problem, but does anyone have any insight on this situation.

Most of the certificates I used to get had NC-nnnnn-xx written on them instead on NCnnnnnxx.

I think we should be putting the number on the maps and certs just as it will be found in the USATF database.

If we use a format that can't be found in the search, we are not doing runners or race directors any favors. We should be writing our cert numbers without any spaces or dashes, in every use of those numbers.

We need to do one of two things. Either:

Instruct all certifiers to eliminate the dashes from their certification numbers (I've been putting dashes in mine for years and it hasn't been an issue until now), or

Put something on the website advising the user to enter the course number without punctuation (probably a better idea because there are still thousands of courses out there with dashes in their course numbers).

I think we need to do both - don't use them in our paperwork, and put the proper format as a guide on the Website. Over time (10-year expiration), all courses should have the proper format of the certification number.

I wonder if it is possible to change the configuration of the search on the website so it ignores "-" in search strings?

Some maps have dashes, some have spaces, and some have underscores. All could be trapped, if the USATF Webmaster is so inclined. But, if we can avoid the issue (over time) by not putting anything except alpha-numeric values, why not format them all the same?
