I use a Garmin 60CS, GPS device which has a built in air pressure altimeter. It seems to be quite accurate provided you allow it time to calibrate itself or if you calibrate it with a know elevation. It works by calibrating its air pressure altimeter with the GPS derived elevation over time. I have very good correlation with the 1:50,000 topo maps.

The Mapsource software comes with a really neat profile feature. I record a track when I measure the race and then edit it to remove any extraneous points that get in due to doubling back and so on. You can cut and paste track segments which allows you to create a full race track even though you may have measured it in segments. Then a click produces a profile that I print to a pdf file and give to the race director.

Send me your e-mail address (to pauladams@telus.net) and I'll send you a sample of one that I have produced using this method.
