Back in the spring the Fargo (ND) Marathon & 1/2 Marathon came up w/ alternate courses to use in case the Red River flooded the original course (I believe the "flood" courses were used).

Now the Richmond (VA) Marathon faces a similar threat due to heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

Richmond Marathon course appears safe from flooding

The article gives no details about the alternate course. Perhaps Bob Thurston or Paul Hronjak know if the certification paperwork has been filed.

Jim - Closer to home, the Hartford Marathon has had flooding problems over the years. Last year they had 2 flood courses measured; one for the marathon and one for the half marathon. CT 08013JHP and CT08014JHP. This, of course, prevented any rain for the next 2 races. Hopefully these courses won't be used since in order to stay off low-ground, there are many turnarounds.
There used to be a race in Aurora, Illinois that ran partly on paths along the banks of the Fox River. One year the Fox rose quickly and the course couldn't be used but we couldn't get another course measured in time so they "winged it". Later that year we measured an "upland alternate" that could have been used had it happened again- which, to my knowledge, it didn't.
