Attached is a scan of a page from the May 2006 Scientific American "50, 100, and 150" years ago column. The article is called "Land Surveyor". Maybe we should offer a prize to anyone who can figure out how it works. The intriguing words in the description, from 1856, are" Our engraving illustrates the adaption of a neat little pocket instrument for measuring ..." I wonder what the "neat little pocket instrument" is. Maybe an HP-35 scientific calculator. :-)

I couldn't figure how how to attach an image so I'm embedding a URL to the image on my web page. Hope it works.
