Mark - ITU is pretty stringent with their technical requirements, especially when you're talking course measurement for the WCS and the Olympics.

I used to have a soft copy of the technical official's manual hiding in my computer (I'm a USA Triathlon certified race director, level I and a USA Triathlon certified official, category 3). I'll take a look and see if I can find the information...that is, if you're really interested.

Another thing to keep in mind here, also: Ironman (World Triathlon Corporation) kind of-sort of has their own rules and standards which don't necessarily align with ANY of the national governing bodies for triathlon, or the ITU.
