I've done that, but it generally requires putting the counter in a plastic bag to keep the grease from getting on things, and it always windd up on my hands for the ride after re-installing.

This is why I've come to appreciate the Protegé more and more. You can simply reset to zero before each ride, and go. See my related thread on this topic under Electronic Measurement:
