I had occasion to certify an indoor track in Ada, Ohio, for the Polar Bear Marathon. A potential contestant wanted to use it to qualify for Boston.

This morning's Wall Street Journal mentioned it in their article on the subject.

Indoor marathons

I have no idea how laps were counted. Given that there had to be few competitors, electronic counting was seen to be prohibitively expensive, leaving more primitive options.
