Reply to "Electric Bikes for measuring hilly courses with weak legs?"

Mike,
I measured 4 or 5 with it this past summer/fall. It's really no different than a regular bike. It has a 24 speed drive train, so it rides just like a regular bike with the assist disabled. It has pretty good range if I keep it out of level 4. If I do a ride completely in level 4, it will go about 12 miles. Level 4 provides an additional 200% of the effort that the rider applies. Level 1 provides 25% assist. But, it doen't provde any assist if I don't pedal. There's no throttle.

It was a bit pricey at approximately $2500. And as with my other measuring bike, I always keep a separate wheel with the counter mounted, so that when I use it to measure, I just swap out the front wheel with the measuring wheel.

Another thing about having a separate wheel for measuring is that I equip the measuring wheel with thornproof tubes and kevlar liners to protect against punctures. So far (not to tempt fate), I've never had a flat tire on the front while measuring.
