Brandon,I know how it feels when they mess up a course you measured. I think I told you about how big races around here tend to invite me to inspect things to be sure all is ok and maybe this event will ask you to do that.

As a measurer, one approach is "I measured the course and it's the event's job to run it correctly." I think that's legit, and I won't argue with that. And there's no way we could be present at all the courses we measure. But there are a few that mean a lot to the whole running and non-running community, and I think having a qualified expert (regarding the course I mean) on hand makes sense. Having more is even better (Lyman Jordan and I have jointly patrolled the Army Ten Mile for several years and that works well-- for the last 2 years we've saved the course from adding an extra half mile!).

One common source of some of the setup errors I've experienced is OTHER MAPS of the course, not the official cert map but slick ones that someone produced, that get distributed to police and others. Just one of many ways we keep proving Murphy's Law!
