On April 25, 1971 I did my first measurement with, what became to be know as, the Jones Counter. We had a stretch of highway here that was under construction so my friend, Tom Young, and I took advantage of a 1/2 mile straight section to lay out our calibration course. We were following directions in the issue of Runner's World. Only later did we obtain Ted Corbitt's measurement pamphlet to find out what we had done wrong -- stretching the tape to 10 pounds tension.

After the calibration we then measured our new Triple Cities Runners Club 12-mile course. We extended it to 20 km the next year when Boston required a distance of at least 20 km. This June will be the 46th running of that race, now called the Vestal XX.
