ELIMINATING BACKLASH
The JR counter has a little hole in the driving tab. It was put there to allow the tab to be tied to a spoke. This reduces backlash to near zero. Use a thin wire and twist it snug, then back off just a bit to give a bit of slack. You’ll notice that backlash is now virtually eliminated. Be sure the left-over end doesn't interfere with gear mesh. The downside is that it makes the counter a pain to remove from the bike. Since I leave mine there all the time it’s not a problem for me.
