Does anyone know where I can get black and white street maps to use as background for certification maps?

I use Photoshop to turn color maps into B & W. I can usually get a usable result. Wiggling brightness and contrast until it's right produces what I need.

Adobe Illustrator can also convert color maps to grayscale (Edit>Edit Colors>Convert to Grayscale). Layers can be used to add the route and the start finish sketches.

The problem I have is that there is a lot of stuff on the map that is at least as dark as the lines marking the streets. With Google Maps the street lines are shown as light grey. Even if I mess around with brightness and contrast it is difficult to have the street lines come out black (rather than white) without half the map being black.

Just wondering if maybe there is some online source of maps, or application, that shows the street lines as black, or close to black, so it would be easier to get rid of all the other stuff that is on the map when I convert to B&W.

I know you would have to put in some time, but how about just tracing the streets? You could skip the streets that aren't relevent (between split locations, not close to turns, etc). Just tape the printed map behind a blank sheet, hold both on a window, and trace. A bit of an odd position, but it works. Size the map appropriately (do screen-shots of MapMyRun.com screen, then enlarge or shrink by pasting the image into Word), then all is good. Just another work-around. Some of the measurers do that on submissions to me.

Guys, the Grayscale maps as we all know just don't show well on the USATF site. As the Course Registrar, I have asked for all maps to be done with black drawings for the lines and names of the streets/key points.
Having Adobe or some program it may be possible for me to convert a Grayscale map so it would show well on the USATF site, but that creates lot's of extra work. Hence I have asked for the maps to be done as Black & White copies.
