In compiling my annual report for the convention, I ran a statistic that I find interesting. I don't know how much value it has to anyone, but here goes:

We currently have 12,079 active courses, and a total of 29,272 courses. So 41.26% of all courses since 1979 are active ones.

Discuss.

How do you determine which courses are active? Or maybe a better question is, what is the definition of active?

Download the complete course list. See the column headed "status." Any course with a status beginning with "A" is active.

Active means that it has not expired, failed validation, or been replaced by another course.

Stu:

if you can run the numbers, what percentage of the active courses are from before 1997?

Conversely, what percentage of the courses from 1997 forward are still active?

Jay,

Here's what I got from looking at the latest course list:

Pre 1997 renewed - 439
Total pre 1997 - 15260
Percent active - 2.88

post 1996 Active - 11461
Total post 1996 - 13781
Percent active - 83.2

Stu may have better numbers, but I think I have it right.

So, to put this another way:

Approximately 1 course in 35 from pre-1997 has had its certification renewed.

Approximately 1 course in 6 is either replaced on the course list or fails validation within 10 years of being certified.

It would be interesting to know how many:

races are still being run on expired courses

current active courses are no longer hosting races- i.e. one year only events or events that just didn't catch on.

I may be able to crunch up some more numbers in a bit, but I'm getting packed for the trip to Hawaii now Smiler

I believe Pete's numbers are correct. What they don't show is how many races are still run on expired courses. Duane has been doing some good work trolling for expired certifications, turning up races that expired yet still advertise certification.
