One of the things I recall from the Old Days of MN was the Map of the Month. When measuring was in its infancy, it was always a fresh experience to see how maps were being done up. Now that MN is here, and I have 28,000+ maps in my basement, I'll share one a month. Each will be selected for either artistic layout, sheer volume of information, ease of reading, or just because I like it.

Frankly, I've seen some pretty nasty-looking maps lately. Perhaps the Map of the Month will inspire. A Thurston usually does it for me Smiler

I'm pretty partial to Ron Scadera's (which all pass through my hands en route to Stu) and Bill Belleville's (which don't). They're excellent examples, respectively, of hand-drawn and electronic maps.

Bill Belleville's maps are indeed very impressive. Does he use special software to do that or just a lot of hard work?

I couldn't find anything in a search for Scadera or Scaderas.

Here's May's MOTM. I like this one because it's easy to read and shows the SPR clearly.

I neglected to post an August MOTM, so this will rectify that:

Nice job of getting a marathon on one page, with the waypoints as well.

Stu:
I did not notice any waypoints (GPS coordinates) you mention on the map above.Perhaps you are confusing it with the marathon map I sent you (NC07115NW), which does have all the waypoints listed?

Why is NE07004KU not listed on the USATF web site?

By "waypoints" I meant to say measured miles. "Waypoint" is easier to type, although now I realize it's technically incorrect.

It's not up on the site yet because I just got it in. It'll go out at the end of the month.

September's MOTM comes from Ron Fitzpatrick. Ron's maps always have a very professional look to them, but somehow personal. Nicely done.

Duane Russell provides October's MOTM, the Denver Marathon.

They should all be this good.

I'm torn between two maps this month. Ron Fitzpatrick's Dixville Races Half Marathon (NH07018RF) is so artfully done, with moose logos at each mile marker that it was hard to resist. But I have to give the nod to NJ07029LMB for the sheer novelty value of running a 5K in a turnpike service plaza.

AL07028JD gets it this month. Nothing fancy, but it's extremely clean, shows the SPR, and has all the information needed to lay out the course. And you can read it.
